Empirical Systems Aerospace, Inc. (ESAero) is a growing aerospace company in the San Luis Obispo area that provides various services which include but are not limited to rapid system development, on-demand niche engineering, hands-on development/testing, and small UAS aerospace system manufacturing.

Job Summary: 

Reporting to the Quality Manager, the Quality Engineer will be responsible for project support and will support AS9100 Rev D certification maintenance, operations efforts and audits.  The ideal candidate must be willing to undertake a variety of tasks to support the evolution of the Quality Management System as the company grows its manufacturing capabilities. 

Duties / Responsibilities of the Quality Engineer: 

  • Act as liaison by providing interpretation, communicating, and educating of quality requirements, policies, or procedures to the functional program representatives. 

  • Development and maintenance of inspection instructions, ensuring inspection instructions meet the technical data package requirements and meet production needs. Internal FAI support. 

  • Support work instruction development and maintenance activities by reviewing work instructions, test instructions, auditing processes, and assuring configuration management. 

  • Provide guidance and assistance in developing workmanship standards, test procedures and quality assurance strategies. 

  • Work closely with Manufacturing Engineering and Project Management teams to develop tools, fixtures and assembly and test procedures to support high quality manufacturing of project deliverables and products and reduce defects in various processes. 

  • Assist in developing systems methodology to streamline product development to incorporate “robust” design tools to eliminate mistakes, design for cost, FMEA, qualification testing, design quality, reliability into the products produced; codify design process and craft a smooth transition to serial production. 

  • Participate in defect review and Material Review Board, Non-Conforming Material Reports (NCMRs), working with cross-functional teams to disposition and root-cause investigation, corrective and preventive actions. 

  • Coordinate deliverable activities with customers, Program Managers, Engineering and Manufacturing Leads to ensure deliverable items are correctly packaged, documented and ready for customer review / buy-off. 

  • Oversee processing of customer returned material and control of deficiency report documents from receipt to delivery of corrected product. 

  • Verify product and process compliance with respect to contractual, technical, industry, AS9100 Quality Management System (QMS) requirements and internal policies. 

  • General QA support: determining the effectiveness and relevance of the QMS, track performance metrics, support corrective action and continuous improvement activities throughout the organization, internal audits, and external audit support. 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required 

  • Education and/or training in lean manufacturing, SPC, rapid prototyping, design manufacturing, design for cost, robust design a plus. 

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in a similar role 

  • Proficient analytical and problem-solving skills (e.g., pareto and trend analysis); 

  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings/specifications 

  • Working knowledge of measuring equipment and tools (e.g., calipers, multimeter, oscilloscope, etc.) 

  • Experience with IPC-A-610C, J-STD-001, IPC/WHMA-A-620 and commercial electronics workmanship standards preferred but not required. 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of quality standards and methods (AS9100, ISO, SPC, CPI, and TQM). 

  • Proficient experience with MS Office and industry-related software applications 

  • Astute oral and written communication, time management, attention to detail, multi-tasking and exceptional customer service skills. 

  • Knowledge of contract manufacturing and other related supply chain practices, a plus. 

  • Ability to work effectively alone and within a team environment.
