Tool Design Engineer
Empirical Systems Aerospace, Inc. is seeking a Tool Design Engineer to join our team. ESAero is a growing aerospace company in the San Luis Obispo area and provides various services which include but are not limited to rapid system development, on-demand niche engineering, hands-on development/testing, and small UAS aerospace system manufacturing.
**This position is fully on-site at Empirical System's Aerospace in San Luis Obispo, CA
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and manufacture tools, jigs, fixtures, and production aids that support high-volume production of parts and assemblies.
- Develop and implement standard processes to ensure parts and assemblies are manufactured in accordance with customer requirements.
- Tool development with a focus on safety, ergonomics, automation, efficiency, tooling inventory/tracking, and quality.
- Work with the manufacturing and design teams to gather requirements and needs for specific tooling.
- Work with quality to develop and implement a tool maintenance and inspection plans for all tooling.
- Design tooling using design-for-manufacturing (DFM) principles to reduce cost, touch labor, and increase throughput and repeatability.
- Identify product design changes that improve DFM.
- Develop training documentation for using tooling.
- · Collaborate closely with Project Managers to ensure work is completed on time and within budget.
- · Support meetings with the customers, management, and other stakeholders.
- Work closely with Quality Assurance to ensure tooling is designed to meet product requirements.
Required Qualifications and Skills:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience, 5 year preferred in manufacturing engineering or tool design.
- Hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment
- Proficient in GD&T as well as Solidworks.
- Must be able to work in a small, effective manufacturing team while leading others towards common goals and milestones.
- Knowledge to translate an engineered design and drawings into build instructions which can be used by assembly and test personnel to duplicate the required product performance.
- Ability to comprehend specification sheets and industry standards.
- In-depth knowledge of common manufacturing processes and machinery.
- Work effectively and efficiently given schedule and budget constraints.
- · Strong understanding and practical application of AS9100, ISO9001, or similar quality management system standards.
- · Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.

- Willing to relocate to San Luis Obispo, CA
Desired Qualifications and Skills:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in manufacturing engineering.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience focused on tool design and process development.
- Previous experience with tool design in an aerospace work environment.
- Additional experience working with new product developments.
- Familiarity with electronics manufacturing.
- Specific experience with sheet metal fabrication, plastics, and printed circuit board manufacture.
- Experience with high-rate production tooling design and methods.
- Knowledge of computerized MRP/ERP systems, an understanding of inventory control methods and production control techniques.
- Experience with supplier management and procurement (such as SOWs, RFPs, and/or vendor management).
- Familiarity with Department of Defense (DoD) regulations and experience in working on DoD manufacturing contracts.

Hiring Range: $80k-$120k Annually
